It Is Time to Get to Work!

It Is Time to Get to Work!

January 7, 2024

INTRODUCTION:  God has always wanted His people to get to work. In the Old Testament, as the Babylonian captivity was ending, we can read about the Jews under the leadership of Ezra, Haggai and Zacharia. They were sent back to rebuild the house of God, the temple.  They started the work under the leadership of Ezra, but they didn’t get the job done. They were distracted by various things. One of those things was putting their own house above God’s house. The prophets of Haggai and Zacharia were sent to speak to God’s people and to chastise them for stop working.  The rebuilding of God’s house would definitely benefit God and the worship of God, but it would also benefit the people whom God loved and who assembled to praise and sacrifice to God.  I fear God’s people today may be guilty of the same kinds of things today. Maybe we have the tendency to put our own things first and God’s things after.

To get the Lord’s work done today we need workers. The question for us today is, are we truly fulltime workers of God or just parttime workers?

1.THE READING OF ROMANS 16                                                                                                                                                                                      The Church in Rome is a very interesting church in New Testament times. Romans’ chapters 12-16 is all about workers of Christ!   We can learn so much from studying this letter.  In Romans chapters 12-13 we can learn what the work is. Romans 14-15 We learn that we must not let judgment, nor disputes get in the way of working. We must approve of each other and stay busy in the Lords work.

Who were the workers of the Church in Rome? Read about some of them in Romans 16.

  • Phoebe, verse 1. ( A woman.)
  • Priscilla & Aquila, verse 3. ( A married couple.)
  • Andronicus & Junia, verse 7. (Missionaries and travelers.)
  • Rufus and his mother, verse 13.
  • All kinds of people who were connected and personally busy in the work of Christ.

All of these workers were associated with Jesus Christ.

Verse 3- Fellow workers in Christ Jesus. Verse 7- In Christ before me. Verse 6- Beloved in the Lord. Verse 9- Fellow worker in Christ. Verse 10- Approved in Christ. Verse 11- In the Lord. Verse 12- Labored in the Lord. Verse 13- A choice man in the Lord. All these and many more people who have connected the idea of “being in Christ” with “at work!” Working for the Lord!  Have you made that connection

2.WHAT IS THE WORK? WHAT AM I TO BE BUSY DOING? ROMANS 12:1-8 We are all His workmanship so what kind of work are we to do? What were Roman Christians doing?

  • A living and holy sacrifice. V.1-2
  • No room for selfishness or self-centeredness. V.3-5
  • What are you doing? What are your gifts? V.6-8
  • What do we do? V.10-16

So, what are we supposed to be busy doing?

  • Loving others.
  • Honoring others. V.10
  • Serving the Lord fervently. V.11
  • Rejoicing people/joyful V.12
  • Patient people. V.12
  • Helpful people. V.13
  • Eager to practice hospitality. V. 13

Decide- what is your gift and get busy using it to serve others! You must look at this Church family and use your gifts to serve each other. Nothing will make you stronger or more excited than serving others.

How to overcome discouragement?  Stop focusing on yourself and get up and do something for someone else! We need to stop “paneling our own houses!” (Haggai 1:4-11)

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Romans 16:25-27 The Obedience of faith. The obedience of faith is much more than just belief and baptism!!!  We have been chosen by God and Christ to carry out their will to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. We have the purpose to serve others, not just ourselves, in the same manner as Jesus served.

You are not just a Christian, there are no Christians separate from the Body of Christ. You are a part of the BODY OF CHRIST, members of one another! Are you all in? As a humble part of the body, what is your gift? Just look at the list in Romans 12 and decide which one of these gifts or talents you have.  Figure that out and get busy!
