HANDOUT FOR SERMON: THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS CHRIST AND THE AUTHORITY IN JESUS.  Manchester, TN. June 2, 2024

INTRODUCTION: We are to be people of great faith. Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God. How strong is your faith? Did you realize there is a connection between “faith” and understanding “the authority of Jesus Christ?”  If your faith is weak or struggling, then you will most likely struggle with accepting the authority of Jesus Christ in your life.  His authority will not have the impact on your life as it should.

Jesus mentions a Centurion and speaks about his faith. (Luke 7:1-10, Matthew 8:5-13) This Centurion seeks out Jesus for the healing of his slave. Jesus responds in amazement at the centurion’s confidence that Jesus did not need to come to his house to heal the slave. Jesus then states that the man’s faith surpassed what Jesus had seen among God’s own people!  This man understood that Jesus as God is the one with authority in all areas of humanity, even around healing from a distance (Luke 7:10)

Understanding “authority” is founded in very deep and strong faith! Do we understand the authority of Jesus Christ and the authority in Jesus Christ?

Scripture: Luke 7:2, Luke 3:14, Luke 23:47, Acts 10:1

Jesus has all authority. Matthew 28:18-20

Define authority:

  • The right to rule.
  • The right to act.
  • The power or right to give orders, make decisions, enforce obedience.

Jesus Christ has the RIGHT TO RULE:

  • In the world and in heaven.
  • In your life.
  • In the church.
  • In the kingdom.

We have the RIGHT TO ACT.

  • Jesus has ultimate power and authority over all things yet allows “me” to have the “right to act” in certain things concerning me and my life.
  • In my own personal life.
  • In my marriage.
  • In my work and in my choices.
  • However, every single “right to act” must fit under the principle that Jesus has the right to rule over me.

Our response can vary:

  • No, I don’t want to believe or do everything He tells me.
  • Yes, but you really don’t mean it. You say “yes” but in your actions you do what you want not what He wants.
  • Yes, and you mean it, but you stumble, fall or sin yet always acknowledge His authority and rule.

LESSON:                                                                                                                                           1.JESUS IS YOUR MAGNIFICANT CREATOR, JOHN 1:1-5   You exist because He decided and allowed it. He made you and everything around you. Your life belongs to Him. Unfortunately, we don’t want to acknowledge this totally. Jesus made you so that you may seek a relationship with Him. He is your creator, and you were created for a purpose. You are to live to honor Him which will require full surrender to Him.

Scripture: John 1:1-5, Acts 17:24-28, Colossians 1:15-19

2.JESUS IS THE ALL-POWERFUL KING, Matthew 4:17-23 Jesus as the King means He has a kingdom. Being the King means He protects His people; He controls their lives. Do you accept and recognize Jesus as YOUR king?

There are two types of people in the world:

  • Those who believe and submit to Him and accept His Kingship and authority.
  • Those who did not believe yet upon His return will bow before Him.

Scripture: Matthew 4:17, Matthew 2:2 & 6, Revelation 19:11-16, Philippians 2:9-10

3.JESUS IS THE LIVING WORD, JOHN 1:1-5 & 14-17 Jesus wants you to truly know Him. So, He came to earth and became “the word!” He wanted to share with us good things all for our benefit. Jesus is God’s wisdom and grace on the earth. He presented humanity truth, grace and the will of God. Jesus also promised to send the Holy Spirit to men who would write down the words of Jesus. We all need to listen to what Jesua wanted us to hear. We will do well to listen carefully to all that He said. The words of Jesus are described as light to shine in the dark spaces in your life.

Scripture: John 14:6, John 14:14-17, Revelation 1:2-2 & 19, Revelation 22:16-21, John 12:47-48, 2 Peter 1:19

CONCLUSION: Jesus has the right to make all the rules because He is our creator and King, He gives you the option and right to act within His word, the word of God. Jesus is telling us to do it His way and NOT our own way. That is why He revealed and gave us His word.
